• How heavy is the material you are considering and will it require special framing or retrofitting?
• Is the material available in a variety of colors and styles that complement your home?
• Does the material meet local town and Massachusetts state fire codes?
• Are there any extraordinary installation and maintenance issues to consider?

Asphalt Shingles
The most common residential roofing material used in Beverly, Newburyport, Beverly, Billerica and surrounding North Shore towns, asphalt shingles are popular because they are economical and easy to install. These shingles can be reinforced with fiberglass or organic materials without changing the appearance of the shingle.
Metal Roofing
Metal roofs are resistant to the extreme weather conditions typically found on the Massachusetts shoreline. Available in panels or shingles, metal roofs are available in aluminum, copper, stainless steel and zinc. They are typically lightweight and long-lasting, and compliment many of the architectural styles found on the New England coast. They are also a consideration if you are considering capturing rainwater.
Slate Roofing
A traditional material that can be found on many traditional New England landmark buildings, slate offers both natural beauty and a distinctive elegant appearance, slate colors include mixed shades of black, green, grey, red and purple.
Wood Shingles and Shakes
The quintessential New England look that is so popular and that has been used on many of the homes on the North Shore of Massachusetts for hundreds of years. Homeowners love the look of wood shingles and shakes and how they weather to an attractive shade of silver-gray. Wood shakes are a handmade alternative and are rougher-looking than wood shingles, which are usually cut by machine.
Synthetic Roofing Products
There are now many synthetic roofing products, including rubber, plastic and polymer roofing, that have been developed to give you the color, look and texture of natural materials like slate and wood. These products are designed to be strong and easy to maintain, and some of these materials are fire-resistant. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) suggests you look at full-size samples of the synthetic product and the manufacturers’ brochures before making a final decision.
